Background and details
There are different autobound bracketing systems and many commercial "brands." The autobound systems have in common that do not require gumies or metal ligations to hold the arch to the bracket. One autobound systems best known as a result of an extensive marketing work directed at the general public by the company, That's Damon's. but there are many others: Smart Clip, In-Ovation ®.. etc.
The most important advertising claims from this technique (and from autobound systems as a whole) are that it reduces the treatment time and the need to do extractions to solve the problems of stacking.
The results of scientific studies that have been undertaken to substantiate these claims are contradictory. Indeed, in the last edition of one of the most important textbooks of Orthodontics worldwide (Contemporary Orthodontic Applications). William. A. Porffit, Henry W. Fields Jr., David M. Sarver. 5th Edition, Elsevier 2013.) refers to the fact that there's no scientific evidence of these benefits that are claimed for this type of device. That doesn't mean that the brackics aren't good but sometimes the advertising that's made of them is misleading (as referred to by the same complainant).
Either way, it's one of the good orthodontics that's on the market. The choice of the type of technique to be used and the "mark" of the apparatus should be an orthodontist, who, depending on his experience, training and treatment approach to each particular case, will choose the best one to conduct his treatment.
The price of these brackets That's far better than conventional bracketing, and that obviously has an impact on costs of Orthodontics treatment. We use them in some cases where we consider them to be the best choice for patients.
The bracketing system is nothing but a "vehicle," a tool to achieve a result. Whenever a quality bracket system is chosen (as with anything else there are different qualities that are not related to the technique itself but with manufacturing accuracy) good results can be achieved independently of the technique.
Decisions about the Orthodontics Treatment Plan (if or if dental extractions are necessary for example) should be made on the basis of the diagnosis of each case and not of the type of device to be used. That is to say, it will be anatomical conditions and the patient's type of bite (how much bone there will be to expand without picking his teeth out of his bone for instance) that determine if some tooth needs to be removed during orthodontics treatment.
