Advantages and disadvantages
- Can't be seen.. When they are cemeterized at the inside of their teeth, they are hidden.
- Abbreviations can be avoided if extractions are necessary. They can put some caresses glued to an adjacent tooth to cover the extraction hole, something that isn't possible if the bracketers are glued out.
- Precision. Some linguistic orthodontics are extremely precise. A recent scientific study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (Am J Dentofacial Orthope 2011; 140: 433-43) measured the accuracy with which planned results were achieved in a group of 94 patients treated consecutively with the Incognito ® (3M Uniteck) linguistic orthodontics system in a private consultation. The sample included all sorts of problems and the cases were not selected, that's to say, all of the completed cases were included for a particular period of time. It was found that the results obtained differed from those planned with an mean of 1 mm and 4 degrees. It's important to note that not only the accuracy of the apparatus is important but the experience and knowledge of doctors in this technique.
- Safer. A scientific study conducted at the University of Amsterdam and published in the European Journal of Oral Sciences (Eur J Ortal Sci 2010; 118: 298-303) found that teenage patients who were treated with linguistic orthodontics have shown 5 times less malcalcification injuries and these were 10 times less severe than those treated with vestibular (conventional) orthodontics.
- Unlike other forms of invisible orthodontics, such as transparent alignators,can be used in all cases same as conventional orthodontics.
Nevertheless, Depending on the particular characteristics of each type of linguistic orthodontics system, comfort and efficacy vary greatly. The professional's experience and knowledge with this technique are also important.
The disadvantages are that the costs are higher, that during the adaptation period it's annoying with the skin and bracketing and that during this period some sounds can be difficult to say correctly. In our experience, choosing the right type of orthodontics system, the adaptation period ranges from 3 to 4 weeks.
