Background and details
The agenesia of lateral incisors is the congenital absence of these teeth. It's a quite common situation and often detectable because the milk tooth doesn't fall or if it doesn't fall, it doesn't erupt the permanent tooth. There are many ways to figure this out. Traditionally this situation is treated with conventional fixed prostheses, carving his neighbor teeth to place them with porcelain crowns.
The treatment that on the one hand has the advantage of rapidity, has the disadvantage of high biological costs, as by carving and losing teeth their integrity, they are more susceptible to fractures, caries, etc. That sometimes becomes necessary to conduct endodontics treatment prior to the caries. Another solution is to put up "Maryland" bridges, which are bridges attached to neighbouring teeth. That highly conservative option has the disadvantage that this type of prosthetic can be easily leaked and so they cannot perform a regular chewing function. Nevertheless, this option is very good as an interim treatment for adolescents, far too young to be treated with dental implants because they have not yet completed their maxillary growth. A treatment of orthodontics can also offer a solution by closing spaces and leaving canines at the place of the lateral incisors.
The drawback of this option is that it's necessary to shape the dung's crown so that it looks like a lateral incisor. The advantage that in some cases where, for example, coatings exist, you can use the space of the missing teeth to align the rest. That option will currently be accepted that the best choice is to replace absent parts with dental implants combined with an earlier treatment of orthodontics to correctly align the neighbouring teeth and distribute equally the dentage spaces.
Following orthodontics usually the bone in the areas of agenesia is very thin and an appropriate implantological treatment in these cases involves the regeneration of bone simultaneously with the placement of the implants supplemented sometimes even with gum grafts to give a more esthetic and natural appearance to the implantompondations.
